Long-time photojournalist Jeff Berger first visited St. Maarten while working
for New England Mutual Life Insurance Company (NEL) in 1978, when he was editor
of NEL's field magazine, The Pilot's Log. NEL was holding its annual
agents meeting and Jeff was there to write about and photograph it. He fell in
love with the island and with its people, and was especially impressed with a
dinner under the stars at the "Caravanserai Restaurant," then the best restaurant
on the island, and with the island's pristine beaches.
He and his wife returned in 1979 and have been visiting and staying longer
ever since.
Late in 1993, three years after launching JMB Communications, his PR and marketing
company, Jeff launched
www.jmbcommunications.com, his company website, on which he posted many
writing samples including a one-page narrative about St. Maarten / St. Martin.
New search engines picked up that writing sample, people started reading it,
and soon Jeff got calls from friends on the island thanking him for mentioning
them in his "St. Maarten Website." "I had no idea what they were talking
about," he recounts.
He quickly figured it out. His "St. Maarten site" has grown and changed
tremendously since then, and in December, 2014, it surpassed 4,000,000 visitors.
